Michael Costello talks Fashion Week, Beyonce and his latest work
The stars of “Project Runway” are taking over El Paseo Fashion Week on Tuesday night. Michael Costello has once again brought together a group of designers from the show to debut their exclusive collections at Fashion Week.
Before he was the designer to the stars, Costello was a teenager with a dream working on his designs in Palm Springs.
“I’ve always believed that something from me being out here and having so much support from the city would turn into this moment today. You know, hopefully, I’ll be the mayor of Palm Springs one day. You never know,” Costello said.
The designer got his start on “Project Runway”. Now he’s been reunited with fellow stars year after year for Fashion Week El Paseo. He said at Tuesday’s show you’ll see lots of hats that he made from scratch.
“I was playing with the molds and playing with the heat lamps and the humidifiers and the stretchers to get the wool felt to take shape,” Costello said.
The designer is known for his ability to make women of all shapes and sizes look beautiful.
“I get stereotyped as one of those designers that only does Beyonce and Lady Gaga and women who are sizes 2-4 and then you have someone like Chrissy Metz, who’s such a wonderful girl and she’s, like, ‘I want something flowy. I want something fitted. What can you do?'” Costello said.
Costello designed a dress for Beyonce and says she’s great to work with.
“She’s really cool. She knows exactly what she wants when it comes to a performance or a red carpet or even just a daytime look,” Costello said.
This homegrown designer now holds the key to the city of Palm Desert and has his name cemented in Palm Springs. To say the Coachella Valley is proud of his success is an understatement.
