Authorities investigate Blythe collision involving big rig

Crews were working a traffic collision and fuel spill Thursday morning to the east of the Coachella Valley.

The California Highway Patrol says a tanker truck rear ended another big rig at 12:25 a.m. The collision happened along the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near Wiley’s Well Road.

Traffic was slowed, and a second rear-end collision occurred in the backup.

A helicopter was called in to fly an injured motorist from that second collision to a hospital. Three people were in the car. Both traffic lanes were closed for a time, but one reopened at 4:17 a.m.

The CHP said 200 gallons of fuel spilled into the freeway’s center divider, and a hazardous materials team was called in to clean it up.

There was no word how long the clean up would take.
