Jonathan Martinez, 8, and his teacher, 53-year-old Karen Elaine Smith, were shot by Smith’s estranged husband, 53-year-old Cedric Anderson. A nine-year-old student was also injured in the shooting but was in stable condition at the hospital, according to police.

San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan revealed new details about the couple’s relationship.

He said the shooter was previously a pastor, a maintenance worker, and most recently unemployed. He wasn’t married to Karen for that long; they had a four year relationship and separated in March. Karen moved out of their home and began living with one of her adult children at that time, according to Chief Burguan.

Anderson left a note at the home, not a suicide note, that said he needed some closure and attention to something. He said he felt a bit dishonored, according to authorities. The note raised the attention of investigators after they found it, but they said it wasn’t necessarily the type of note that would draw alarm.

Chief Burguan said Anderson used a .357 revolver and shot 10 rounds, reloading one time, striking Anderson and the two students behind her.

We also learned a bit more about Jonathan Martinez. He was a special needs student and had Williams Syndrome. He had previously gone through heart surgery as well. Williams Syndrome affects the cardiovascular system and ability to learn.

A Go Fund Me page has been started to help raise donations for Jonathan’s family.

School district staff said that North Park Elementary will remain closed until Monday, April 17. They are offering childcare at a local middle school for parents on Thursday and Friday. A candlelight vigil is also scheduled at North Park Elementary School Tuesday at 7 p.m.
