San Bernardino community comes together to remember Jonathan Martinez

The community of San Bernardino is paying their respects to the student who was killed in a murder-suicide at North Park Elementary School.

The family of 8-year-old Jonathan Martinez wanted to maintain their privacy during their difficult time. They also understood their son’s death touched the community. The family decided to open the viewing and funeral service to the public. Former teachers, fellow students, school officials and first responders were among the many who came to pay their respects.

Martinez had a rare genetic condition called “Williams Syndrome”, which is why he was in the class of mostly special needs students where the shooting took place.

“Jonathan had a very bubbly and upbeat spirit. Always smiling, he was always very playful. And the times his father brought him by our home, I would always interact with him. He was always cheerful and everything like that,” said family friend Vernard Williams.

More than $130,000 was raised for Martinez’s family on a GoFundMe page. A family friend said they are “overwhelmed” by the support and love of the community.
