Community comes together to celebrate Earth Day
Earth Day, celebrated across the country on April 22, shines a spotlight on the environment.
Saturday a number of local businesses celebrated the day and honored Mother Nature.
At the Living Desert donors and guests welcomed two new African wild dogs to their newly renovated habitat.
“We’re so excited to debut two new African wild dogs here at the Living Desert. We remodeled their exhibit. These are two, two-year-old sisters, we’re so delighted. They’re super energetic,” said Erin Scott with the Living Desert.
The zoo which was founded the same year Earth Day began said they try to make decisions that are environmentally friendly.
“We recycle all of our materials, we also don’t use straws because those getting in the water ways and are dangerous for the animals. We use recyclable materials in our retail environments. And we also use water efficient and drought tolerant landscaping,” Scott said.
Just across town the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert hosted a different celebration.
“The message needs to get out to protect the earth and we felt that this was a good opportunity,” said general manager Thomas Wootan.
Art museum employees interacted with people of all ages and spreading the word about art and nature. Whether it’s supporting the Living Desert or recycling plastic bottles, everyone can do something to keep our earth beautiful and healthy.
