5 teens allegedly steal car in DHS, lead deputies on high-speed pursuit, non-injury crash
Five teens are in hot water for allegedly stealing a car in Desert Hot Springs and taking it on a high-speed joyride, triggering a pursuit that ended in San Bernardino County where the car slammed into a center median and overturned.
The 15- to 17-year-old boys, from Moreno Valley and Perris, were taken to San Bernardino Juvenile Hall on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and felony evading.
They were spotted in a stolen Volvo at 7:41 p.m. Friday and allegedly sped away from a sheriff’s deputy who attempted to pull them over in Rancho Cucamonga, according to San Bernardino County sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Lopez.
A pursuit ensued, with the teen behind the wheel driving ”erratically at speeds of over 80 mph,” Lopez said.
Deputies attempted an ultimately unsuccessful Pursuit Intervention Technique — or PIT maneuver — in an attempt to get the teens to stop the car, which ended up crashing into a center median near the intersection of Haven Avenue and Arrow Route in Rancho Cucamonga, he said.
The teens, who escaped injury, were detained after being checked by medical personnel, Lopez said. Their names were withheld because they are underage.
