Student Athlete of the Week – Seline Schinke

Seline Schinke’s energy can light up the skies on a winter day in Alaska.

“Oh I always try to rally them up, get them going. We are a good team.” Schinke said.

She’s not just breaking records and winning championships on her own, the energy spilled over to her teammates. A school record in the 4×100 meter relay team. Does being on the podium ever get old?

“No that’s just the glory of working hard, that’s what hard work pays off to be.” Schinke added.

It’s paid off in a big way for Schinke, she picked up the sport just three years ago as a Sophomore, and now it’s paying for school at UC-Riverside.

“I was actually looking into basketball but I kept coming back to track and field. I just fell in love with track and field sophomore year and it’s been history every since.” said the future Riverside Highlander.

“Being someone that’s coaches in all areas, and being all over the United States, I can tell you that she has that little extra special thing that most athletes don’t have.” Schinke’s coach David Sterling said.

With a flip of a switch it goes from all smiles, to show time.

“Different mindset, hard work pays off. On the track it’s business. You have to keep your head down and bust out of there. Focus while you’re performing and after you can glorify in the moment.” Schinke said about her track mindset.

She can do it all, running, jumping and just winning and it’s made her a perfect candidate for an event at the next level that she’s never done in high school.

“She’s just a fantastic overall athlete, being a heptathlete she’s going to do very well.” Sterling added.

“I always try to go after those records and look at the people around me and try to keep up with them and do my best. I always race against myself because you are your own worse competitor.” Schinke finished.
