Sheriff: Deputy was shot multiple times but is in good spirits

More information is coming out about the deputy that was shot Thursday night in Coachella. Authorities said the deputy was shot multiple times but was conscious and in good spirits at the hospital following the shooting.

Sheriff Stan Sniff was able to travel to and visit with our wounded Deputy and his family at the local hospital that evening, he was alert, conscious and in good spirits, although having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The Sheriff later spent time with our SWAT team staff at our commend post in the City of Coachella early this morning during the massive search efforts to apprehend the suspect(s) involved and was briefed on the circumstances involved in our Deputy’s wounding. Any additional information about the details of the incident will be released formally through our PIO staff, as appropriate. Thank you for all of your texts, calls and prayers as a result of this incident we received.

The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Gildardo Davila of Coachella.

A news release early Friday morning said Davila refused to stop in the area of Harrison Street and First Street and threw a handgun from the vehicle.The officer then located the vehicle near Calle Mendoza and Las Flores Avenue as the driver jumped out and ran into a residential neighborhood.

Davila is still on the run. KESQ and CBS Local 2 will continue to deliver updates as the investigation moves forward.
