After deputy shot, woman claims crime and shootings happen often in front of her home

Recently obtained security footage shows the man suspected of shooting a Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy fleeing away from authorities seconds before opening fire.

The video shows a man bailing out of a yellow Ford Mustang and taking off on foot with the deputy’s SUV in hot pursuit. Seconds later shots ring out.

“All we hear was pow pow pow pow pow like eight gunshots,” said Julie Castaneda who lives just a few feet away from where the deputy was shot.

The shooting happened on Calle Mendoza and Las Flores a little before 8 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities have identified a suspected gang member accused of the shooting. A news release early Friday morning said Gildardo Davila of Coachella, 27, refused to stop in the area of Harrison Street and First Street and threw a handgun from the vehicle.

Castaneda has been living at the end of this dead end street where the shooting has happened for a decade with her family. She said there have been multiple police pursuits that have ended in front of her home. She also said she often hears gunfire coming from the empty field next to her home.

“I don’t feel safe and I don’t like having my kids play out here because of that,” Castaneda said.

The evidence of shootings in front of Castaneda’s home is obvious. She says a bullet hole in her mail box has been there for a very long time and the Dead End sign in front of her home is riddled with holes after a blast from a shotgun.

Castaneda would like to see a larger police presence in her neighborhood.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact police immediately.
