Police Chief Dale Mondary said officers followed a blood trail into the house after receiving a report of shots being fired. That’s where they found 23-year old Jose Gabriel Madrigal Vargas of Cathedral City wounded. Vargas was pronounced dead at the scene half an hour later, according to the county coroner’s office.

DHSPD detectives interviewed multiple witnesses connected to investigation. That led them to the suspect, Orlando Archuleta of Desert Hot Springs.

The case was filed with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office on Friday, May 26, and Archuleta was formally charged for the murder of Jose Vargas.

According to authorities, Archuleta has been in custody on a parole hold and is currently housed at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.
