Firefighters battling vegetation fire in Morongo Valley

Update: 4:00 p.m.

Firefighters say the fire is now 16 acres and 80% contained. Forward progress has been stopped.

Update: 8:55 a.m.

Firefighters say the fire is now 60 percent contained.

Cal Fire crews are battling a 20 acre fire in the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve in Morongo Valley Monday morning.

Crews say the vegetation fire is in a remote area of the preserve with steep terrain and says its about a 45 minute hike to get to the area of the fire. There is no threat to structures and the fire has a slow rate of speed.

The News Channel 3/CBS Local 2 have received calls from viewers in Desert Hot Springs saying they could see smoke from the area of the preserve.
