UPDATE: A German Shepard/ Australian Shepard mix 8 to 9-month-old puppy will survive after experiencing extensive abuse last week.

The puppy, named Chance, is with Yucca Valley Animal Control being held for evidence. If the suspect, Charles Lathrop, is found guilty, Animal Control says the dog would get forfeited to the shelter and be up for adoption.

Lathrop remains in jail on $175,000 bail. His next court date is June 6th.

A Yucca Valley man is in jail after being arrested for animal cruelty.

Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Deputies said it happened just after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, when they responded to a call of a man kicking his German Shepherd puppy down the street.

When deputies arrived at the man’s home in the 7000 block of Barberry Avenue, they allegedly saw Charles Lathrop, 60, holding down the puppy on the ground and hitting it with his fist inside his garage.

They said the puppy was crying and trying to get away from Lathrop.

He was arrested and booked into the Morongo Basin Jail.

Deputies said the four-month-old puppy did appear to have suffered serious injuries.
