Suspect accused of shooting deputy arrested in Mexicali

The man accused of shooting a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy after a pursuit has been captured in Mexico. KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 first heard of the new developments after the arrest was posted by Spanish media LaCronica.com.

Gildardo Davila, 27, is a known gang member and was on the run for almost one week. He’s accused of shooting the deputy six times. Davila is charged with attempted murder on a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon, evading arrest, possession of controlled substances and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, in connection with the May 25 deputy shooting.

Reports state he was caught near Mexicali by local police. We have reported that Davila has family in Mexico and investigators were looking at the likelihood that he would flee to Mexico. In fact, Davila had just returned from a trip to Mexico about a month ago.

Spanish media reported that Davila was walking along one of the streets of the Industrial Colony when he was taken into custody on Thursday. This was after California authorities asked the Mexicali police corps to support the capture of Davila, because they believed he may have fled to Mexico to hide in the house of some relatives.

Last week a deputy tried to pull over Davila, but he fled authorities, eventually ditching his yellow Mustang and running away on foot. Davila had a duffel bag holding methamphetamine, heroin and a rifle inside. After he allegedly shot the deputy, he ran to a nearby home where he conned a woman into giving him a change of clothes.

A massive manhunt ensued ending with his capture in Mexico on Thursday. The deputy who was shot is expected to be okay.

The Riverside County sheriff’s Twitter page confirmed that Gildardo Davila is now in custody. Deputies are holding a news conference at the Thermal Station on Friday at 10 a.m. to update the public on Thursday’s arrest and to deliver the newest details of the investigation.

Court records show Davila has numerous convictions dating back to 2008, including vehicle theft, possession of ammunition, possession of controlled substances, possession of burglary tools and violation of the gang injunction served by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office on the region last year.
