An 87-year-old pilot in a small plane that crashed last week in Banning died of his injuries, the county coroner’s office reported Wednesday. Stanley Clebeck, of Patton, California died at 10:38 p.m. Tuesday at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.

When the crash occurred, emergency crews said both the pilot and passenger were injured in the crash.

Clebeck was in a Cessna 150 that went down around 11:45 a.m. June 2 at the intersection of John and Hargrave streets. The pilot was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane crashed into a tree just south of Interstate 10 “under unknown circumstances.” The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.

Clebeck told KESQ & CBS Local 2’s Lauren Coronado that there was a strong wind draft that turned the plane upside down before it crashed to the ground east of I-10. Both he and the passenger were able to get out of the plane, but both sustained moderate injuries in the crash.

We haven’t heard any updates on the passenger’s condition at this time. We’ll deliver updates when we hear back from authorities.
