And KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 confirmed that local Major League Baseball great Steve Garvey is the head coach of the Republican baseball team, but his son said he was not at the practice when the shooting took place.
Ruiz released this statement: “Horrible news, my thoughts with Whip Scalise, staff, and Capitol Police hurt. All at Dem practice safe and thinking of our fellow Congressman Ruiz then posted this on Facebook Wednesday morning at 6 AM: “I’m at the Democratic baseball practice lamenting the terrible news about this shooting. We prayed as a team for Whip Steve Scalise, Capitol Police, and staff that were shot. Capitol Police and SWAT are clearing the perimeter where we are.”
No word how far the Democrat practice was from the GOP practice.
Rep. Steve Scalise was shot Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Virginia, a House colleague told CNN, in what sources are calling an apparent “deliberate attack.”
Scalise, a member of the House Republican leadership as the majority whip, appeared to have been shot in the hip and it appeared two Capitol Hill police agents were shot, according to Rep. Mo Brooks, who told CNN he was on deck when the shooting occurred.
According to both congressional and law enforcement sources, the shooting appears to be a “deliberate attack.”
Alexandria police said earlier Wednesday they were responding to a “multiple shooting” in the city. A tweet also said the suspect is in custody “and not a threat.” CNN has reached out to Capitol Hill police for details.
The President is monitoring the situation, the White House said in a statement.
“The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely,” President Donald Trump said in a statement. “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected.”
