Locals adjust fitness routines to ward off hot temperatures

Some people in the Coachella Valley are adjusting their fitness routines in order to get their workout before the scorching heat takes over their day.

Extreme Heat Wave has record tying and record breaking temps around the Coachella Valley

News Channel 3’s and CBS Local 2’s Jeremy Chen was at Civic Center park in Palm Desert speaking with people in the morning who were working out.

“I love to play tennis,” said Richard Weintrub of Palm Desert. “I cannot survive without it so you adapt.”

Richard Weintrub has been playing tennis often on the tennis courts at Civic Center Park. In order to keep his drive for the sport satisfied, he plays early in the day in order to beat the heat.

“We come out around 7…7:30 [a.m.] and we don’t try to be heroes, play for maybe an hour and 15 minutes and stay hydrated,” said Weintrub.

A four-year-old named Dalton was getting his workout on the jungle gym Wednesday morning. Hi mother was making sure he was getting enough water to get through the morning. His mother said he seemed fine, he was sweating but he still wants to be outside.

Another four-year-old, Gabriela from Cathedral City, was also making sure she was cooling off as she cruised through the park. “I needed to drink a little bit of water,” she told KESQ and CBS Local 2.

Even with hydration and finding some shade, people told us there just comes a time in the day when it’s just way too hot to go outside.

Gene Raley routinely runs around Civic Center Park and typically does a quick jaunt in the morning. Even with the slightly cooler weather in the morning, he’s taking no chances with this heat.

“I hydrate early in the morning before breakfast, and then after breakfast. And then wait a couple of hours and then start drinking [water again].

Tennis enthusiast Weintrub added, “Stay within your comfort zone, you know. In this heat, this isn’t the time to try and go out and run five miles…maybe you do a mile.” Sound advice that allows his routine to continue even in this blistering weather.
