The Berger Foundation surprises Desi Strong Foundation with $10,000

CBS Local Two and the H.N. & Frances C. Berger Foundation partnered on Tuesday to present the Desi Strong Foundation with a surprise grant for $10,000.

A year ago, Desi Cechin died of Neuroblastoma cancer. Her parents honoring her memory by starting the Desi Strong Foundation.

“Here we are a year later and we’ve contributed $50,000 to families. We’ve given a check for $25,000 for research and we’ve given over 250 dolls to children around the country,” said Desi’s father, Terry Cechin.

The Berger Foundation chooses 12 charities each year to grant $25,000.

“It’s hard to cover them all, but we hope the community and the viewers will continue to support this fine organization,” said Christopher McGuire, with the Berger Foundation.

Which is why they awarded this check to the Desi Strong Foundation.

“It’s very humbling to know there’s people out there that are watching us help these families and care and want to give like we want to give. We can’t do it without the contributions and donations and so really it means everything,” Cechin said.

Desi’s mother Laura Palada said she knows Desi would be proud of their work.

“I know she’s there with us in spirit. I feel her presence and I see her and I know she’s very happy and proud of all of us,” said Palada.

The organization is gearing up for its basketball tournament on Aug. 5 and a run/walk in November.
