9 minors hospitalized after chemical vapor reported near Marriott pool
Emergency crews are treating 13 patients that were reportedly exposed to some sort of chemical vapor near the south pool area at the Marriott Shadow Ridge Resort in Palm Desert Monday afternoon. Cal Fire officials said 9 of the patients are minors and they were taken to the hospital.
The problem seems to have stemmed from the pool’s filtration system, but the investigation is ongoing, according to authorities.
The resort is located in the 9000 block of Shadow Ridge Road.
Some of the patients were taken to JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio while others were taken to Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage and Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, according to Cal Fire.
Cal Fire officials said they received a call just after 3 p.m. that some people were having trouble breathing near one of the resort’s pool areas. Firefighters are on scene evaluating the situation.
Officials said three patients are showing serious symptoms, three patients have moderate symptoms, and seven patients have minor symptoms.
Officials at Eisenhower Hospital confirm that they have three patients, “all with minor injuries.”
No word on exactly what kind of chemical vapor was causing the illnesses, or how it came about at the pool Monday afternoon. A Hazmat team is investigating the reported vapor.

KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 reporter Joe Galli spoke with a loss prevention representative with the Marriott Shadow Ridge. The representative said the pool has been tested and was found to be safe. The pool was reopened for guest by the evening.
In May, four people were shocked in a pool at the same location, The Marriott Shadow Ridge Resort.
The Riverside County Department of Environmental Health’s Indio office investigated the electrical failure that is believed to have caused that incident.
