Bar raises money for shooting victim in Cathedral City

The Block Sports Bar & Grill is hosting an all-day fundraiser Monday to raise money for Mike Avila, the man who was shot inside the Cathedral City bar last month, and 100% of the proceeds are going to the victim and his family.

It’s been almost two weeks since Mike was with his wife at the bar, celebrating her birthday; just grabbing beer and chicken wings. Now Mike is in the hospital after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. On Monday, the owner of the bar is trying to do what he can to support the Avila family.

The Block Sports Bar & Grill is located at 68955 Ramon Rd. in Cathedral City.

Nearly two weeks and four surgeries later, Mike is slowly recovering. He was involved in an altercation at the bar that quickly escalated into a shooting. Mike was shot once in the hand and once in the stomach.

Four people allegedly connected to the shooting were arrested that same week and all of them pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The bar owner, Saul Chavez and his family are raising funds for Mike’s recovery. All proceeds go straight to the Avila family. Chavez said he has increased security to full time since the shooting.

KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2’s Lauren Coronado received a statement from Mike’s wife on Monday and spoke to regular patrons of the sports bar to hear their reaction to the shooting, and the fundraiser taking place for the victim.
