High School Football Preview: Palm Desert Aztecs

The 2016 season was a struggle for the Palm Desert Aztecs. They suffered a thumping from rival La Quinta in Week 8, pushing them to 1-7 overall. But they never gave up, finishing with two wins which has given them confidence for the 2017 campaign.

“We started off the year, a lot of stuff going on, a lot of drama and middle of the year was a bit rut for us but we came around the last four games of the year being able to play tough. Being able to end on a positive note and roll that into the off season, getting a new staff put together that works well with each other, busting our butts in the off season in the weight room has led into a really good spring and summer ball.” Coach Shane McComb in his 2nd season with the Aztecs.

“We’re 2 and 0 in my eyes so trying to keep it going.” 3-Way All DVL Brooks Stephenson said.

Seven all DVL players coming back which is the most of any program, but it will go without one of the area’s best defensive backs.

“At the skill position we have a lot of players coming back, we lost Jackson Emmett he left the state so that was a big hit. Skill position we got a lot of older guys but up front we are really young.” Coach McComb said.

They do have 3-way All DVL Player, and arguably the best overall football talent in the valley with senior Brooks Stephenson.

“I see myself as a leader, I hope my teammates do so I try to bring the most everyday.” Stephenson said.

“Brings so much to the table every time he plays, if the ball goes to his side you know he is going to make a play.” JD Menning, his teammate added.

A new offensive coordinator with a new spread offense. We’ll see if it can put the attack back in the Aztecs.
