Man Pleads Guilty to Trying to Take Money From City of Palm Springs Bank Account

A Victorville man who tried to access a city of Palm Springs bank account pleaded guilty Wednesday to identity theft and was sentenced to a year in county jail, followed by a year of supervised release.

35-year-old Ryan J. Carter, 35 made “multiple fraudulent attempts” to access a city account and open lines of credit, according to Palm Springs police. The city Treasurer’s office notified police of the fraud in April, Palm Springs police Sgt. William Hutchinson said.

Carter is not a former municipal employee and has no known association with the city of Palm Springs and it’s also unknown how Carter obtained the city’s banking information.

Following his arrest, Palm Springs police searched Carter’s home, where “evidence related to this specific case and additional crimes related to identity theft and fraud were discovered and seized,” including multiple fake IDs, Hutchinson said.
