Indio residents get look at downtown revitalization plans

Indio residents got a first look at a new plan to revitalize the city’s downtown area.

At Tuesday night’s planning commission meeting, city staff and a consultant went over a new specific plan to upgrade downtown Indio.

The effort would require massive amounts of development that is aimed at making downtown a vibrant area for people to live and work.

Although the city is years away from seeing any construction, members of the planning commission are optimistic this plan.

“The upgrade to the downtown area is what is going to bring people into the downtown. When people are in downtown, that gives you vitalization that gives you a sense of place for people to come and be and that’s what we are trying to do, create a place where people want to come,” said Ken Weller, Vice Chair of the planning commission.

Approval of recommendations to city council was pushed to the next planning commission meeting to give people more time to review the hundreds of pages of documents.

The meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday, public comment is welcome.
