High School Football Preview: Cathedral City Lions
The Cathedral City Lions went 3-7 a season ago but three of their losses came by a touchdown or less. A few plays here and there and they could have found themselves gunning for a final playoff spot.
This year the team is small in numbers but they have one of the best running backs in the valley set to put up huge numbers. James Green III is the real deal as he looks to put the team on his back.
“He is kind of what they call a freak.” Coach Richard Lee said of Green.
“James he is fast, I don’t think anyone will be able to catch him this year.” said his teammate Timothy Miller Jr.
All you have to do is hand James Green the ball and let the kid fly. He will say good bye. A 4.4 40 yard dash and running his way to a possible future college scholarship.
“That’s definitely the goal, I want to get as high up in football as I can, hopefully one day make it to the NFL but for now trying to make it to college.” James Green the Third said.
“I think he is a legitimate division one player, he has all the athleticism. He can jump out of the corner of the field. Everything you want him to do, he can play wide receiver or defensive back. Legitimate D-1 candidate.” Coach Lee added.
There going to need every bit of that speed; young, inexperienced, but ready to prove people wrong.
“Deer in the headlight thing, lot of these guys it is the first time playing at this level. Some of the kids are ready, some of the younger kids put in a lot of work.” Lee stated.
“They just have to be committed cause we need to have a better season this year. I don’t feel like losing a lot.” Miller added.
They just might have a secret weapon. They call it the Lions Den and playing a road game at Cathedral City can sometimes be an unexpected challenge with the loyal fans in the stands.
“People get excited about the games, when the team is playing better it brings more people out and the kids react to it. You got kids, when things are going well they are bobbing on the sidelines. Maybe not focused, but a fun place to play and hopefully uncomfortable for other teams to play at.” finished Lee
