Palm Springs Public Library to host solar eclipse viewing event

Still looking for a place to view the upcoming solar eclipse? The Palm Springs Public Library will offer residents the chance to view the celestial event. The Library joins the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway as another viewing event in the city.

On Monday, August 21, from 9:30-10:45AM the Library will host an outdoor viewing party, seeing a partial eclipse.The Library will also offer a few public programs leading up to the eclipse. Children are invited to come to the Library on Wednesday at 1:30PM. to make their own shoe box viewer and hear a special eclipse story. Then at 6:30 p.m Dr. Stephenie Slahor will discuss both lunar and solar eclipses, along with ways to prepare for the upcoming eclipse. On Thursday morning at the toddler story time from 10:00-11:00AM, a special story will be read. The solar viewing glasses will be given out, one per attendee, while supplies last.

During this national event, the shadow of the moon will cover up the Sun and sweep across the United States in a narrow band from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean in a spectacle that hasn’t occurred in decades. In fact, the last total solar eclipse for the United States was nearly 40 years ago. This eclipse will mainly be seen from the U.S. therefore it’s been named the Great American Eclipse.
