First day of school for CVUSD
Coachella Valley Unified School District students and teachers are returning to class for their first day of the 2017-2018 school year Wednesday.

CVUSD serves a wide area in the eastern Coachella Valley including the cities of Indio and Coachella, the communities of Thermal and Mecca, as well as the Salton City in Imperial County.
The district has approximately 18,800 students.
This upcoming year will see new changes such a new superintendent.
CVUSD appointed Dr. Edwin Gomez to serve in May after the previous superintendent, Dr. Darryl Adams resigned in December 2016. Adams cited health concerns.
Gomez perviously served as superintendent of Adelanto Elementary School District.
Parents and kids arrived bright and early at Valle del Sol Elementary School. For one parent, Maria Ayala, she and her son Juan were the first people to arrive for the first day. Ayala said she wanted to beat the hectic school traffic, knowing from past experience.
“I couldn’t find no parking space,” she said. “I have to be driving and driving around and I have four boys so it was crazy.”
Marissa Gomez came a little bit later to school and said she was able to accommodate the time crunch with her job. She arrived with two sons with one entering kindergarten.
“My boss is really nice and understanding and he’s always allowed me to you know be late for work on the first day of school so I can bring him to school,” Gomez said. Up next is the Desert Sands Unified School District which will have it first day of school coming up next week in Thursday.
