Late local philanthropist and business owner remembered

Desert Hot Springs philanthropist John H. Furbee, who died last month, was remembered Friday during a celebration of his life and accomplishments.

The event was held at the aquatic center named after him at 11750 Cholla Drive in Desert Hot Springs. The celebration of his life, titled: “More Fun Tomorrow,” was free and open to the public.

Furbee died July 12 at the age of 87 following an extended illness. Furbee established the DHS Drug Store more than 50 years ago, then went on to operate several other businesses, along with serving as the president of the Boys and Girls Club and Mission Springs Foundation and sitting on the boards of the Desert Hot Springs Planning Commission and Desert Hot Springs Economic Committee.

The aquatics center was named after him in 2012 following a major monetary donation on his part.

“John Furbee was a community hero, known for his dedication to the youth, animals and local charities,” according to a city statement released shortly after his death. “He had a kind heart and will be sorely missed by our entire community.”

Donations are requested to be made to the donor’s favorite nonprofit or one of Furbee’s, such as The Rotary Club of Desert Hot Springs-Youth Projects.

To make a donation, call Ivan Sewell at (760) 422-6729.
