Roadwork could impact morning school drop-offs in Indio

The Desert Sands Unified School District is the third and final in the Coachella Valley to head back to the classroom. With construction going on at the same time, traffic is sure to be a mess.

Doctor Carreon Boulevard where it meets Jackson Street is closed, it will remain that way tomorrow. The Indio Police Department is now warning parents that they should leave early to avoid any hassles.

Shopping center parking lots have been busy as many parents are gearing up to send kids back to school.

“We’ve had a really busy week this week, doctors appointments for vaccinations, dentists appointments, and just turned our forms in right now for kindergarten,” said Jessi Goodman, mother of a 3rd-grader and kindergarten student.

Meanwhile, in Indio, the Police Department is gearing up as well.

“There is going to be traffic out there. There always is on the first day of school,” said IPD Sgt. Dan Marshall.

But roadwork on a major traffic route through the city is complicating things even more.

“What happens we see is that parents start to get impatient and tempers begin to rise,” Marshall said.

Marshall said parents should wait until there you can find a curb and sidewalk and pull over there.

After all, the kids already have enough to think about.

“Going to first grade and having new friends and a new teacher,” said Allison Cisneros, who is beginning the 1st-grade.
