Jurupa vegetation fire closes animal shelter

Firefighters were working to contain a vegetation fire burning near Riverside County’s Jurupa Valley shelter.

The shelter, located at 6851 Van Buren Boulevard, was evacuating its exterior animals to a secondary location following a fire that was reported at 7:10 a.m.The fire was reported in a lumber yard near Van Buren Boulevard and Clay Street in Jurupa Valley.

Riverside County Firefighters found a well-involved five-acre fire, with heavy compost and sawed up wood, and power lines down.

Shelter spokesman, John Welsh, said the fire was burning near the facility, but the pets there were fine despite a lot of smoke.Police were closing down Van Buren Boulevard between Jurupa Avenue and Clay Street due to the firefighting activity, also Van Buren Boulevard south of Clay Street in Riverside.

CALFIRE said the fire remained at 4 acres and was 10% contained at 12:20 p.m.

There was no threat to any structures, but residents were experiencing drift smoke in the area.

Firefighters recommended people sensitive to smoke to stay indoors.

The Riverside County Animal Shelter was closed to the public, and was expected to remain closed for approximately 24 hours.
