Three men killed, child airlifted after Desert Center semi crash
California Highway Patrol confirmed that three men died in an early morning crash involving two big rigs in Desert Center. Authorities said a little girl sustained major injuries after she was ejected out of one of the big rigs and was airlifted to a hospital.
It happened at 5:47 a.m. on the 10 freeway just east of Eagle Mountain Road in Desert Center.
A big rig was parked on the shoulder of the eastbound I-10, and the driver was outside of the semi-truck.
That’s when another big rig lost control traveling eastbound and crashed into the parked semi-truck, engulfing one of the vehicles.
The fire was contained around 7:20 a.m.
A Container Transfer Corp. truck based out of Salt Lake City, Utah and Beaumont, California was the vehicle that slammed into the parked big rig.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Radford, the girl was inside the Container Transfer truck.
The parked big rig is a Kaiser Transport Inc. truck out of Janesville, Wisconsin and Los Angeles.
There have been 9 deadly collisions between Dillon Road and Highway 177 in the Desert Center area on the I-10.We have learned that Transfer Container Corp. has a violation of an unauthorized person in the truck within in the last two years.
I-10 eastbound was completely closed until approximately 12:35 p.m., when one of the two eastbound lanes was opened.
During the closure, eastbound traffic was diverted off the freeway at Eagle Mountain Road and directed under the freeway to Ragsdale Road eastbound where it connects with Highway 177.
It is unknown at this time if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor.
