Hundreds of students win new bikes for good grades

The season of giving is in full swing as Variety – the Children’s Charity of the Desert rewarded hard working students with a new set of wheels. On Sunday more than 400 kids throughout the valley went home with a brand new bike.

“The kids are here, 4th and 5th graders, their teachers nominate them. They have good grades and good citizenship and it becomes something that’s embossed in their memory,” said General Manager of Palm Springs Motors Scott Simmers.

Andrew Maranan is one of those hard working students rewarded for his efforts. His mom said she couldn’t be more proud.

“It’s awesome because he’s tried hard this year to do what he can do with his grades. And to get the message from his teacher was awesome and it made his day,” said Sara Escarcega

As for Andrew he’s just excited for a new bike.

“My favorite thing about the bike is it’s my favorite color,” Maranan said.

This is the 22nd year the charity has put on this event.

“It’s a busy season. It’s a happy season, and we really don’t take a moment to think about those less fortunate than us. And there are a lot of people in this valley in need of assistance, so please reach out,” said Variety President of the Board Michael Mathews.

Simmers said Palm Springs Motors is happy to be a partner.

“It’s our way to give back to the community. We’ve been here almost 60 years it’s gotta be a two way street. You have to be giving back,” Simmers said.

All bikes were assembled by Palm Springs Motors technicians. This event made possible thanks to a radio-thon raising thousands.

“We raised $75,000 this year to be able to do this. So it’s your donations help these children,” Mathews said.
