District names new Indio elementary school
Desert Sands Unified School District announced the name of a new elementary school currently under construction in North Indio.
The school board voted unanimously Tuesday night to name the campus Richard R. Oliphant Elementary School after former Indian Wells mayor and education supporter, Richard Oliphant.
“I am flabbergasted to think a school will be named after me. I can remember President Ford saying to me, as we dedicated a school to him in Indian Wells, one of the greatest pleasures derived from being President is to have schools named after you. I never made President but now I know what he meant about having a school named after you,” said Oliphant.
The school is located on Gore Street and Avenue 42, across from the Walmart and is expected to open in August 2018.
It is being designed so that the campus can be expanded in the future.
“Currently, when the school opens in August, it will not be at capacity. There will be opportunities in the future when we actually could increase the number of students there, based on some other changes that could take place,” said Mary Perry, public information officer for Desert Sands Unified School District.
The board also unanimously voted to accept the committee’s boundary recommendation, which is a point of contention for some residents.
