Meals on Wheels spreads holiday cheer

A few senior citizens received a special surprise visit from Saint Nick this morning, all thanks to the local meals on wheels program in Palm Desert.

The man in the red suit, Robert Elias, director of the Palm Desert Meals of Wheels, provided gifts while delivering meals on his usual route. Meals that are a lifeline for seniors.

“Most of them are homebound seniors who can’t go out shopping. Who can’t purchase their food and they can’t prepare their food, so our meals are very important to them,” said Elias.

Around 50 people in Palm Desert, Indian Wells and Rancho Mirage are part of the program. Each of them received a gift of a blanket, a night light and an item from a wish list that included items like books, a roll of stamps, or a small frying pan.

For the volunteers and staff at the Joslyn Center, one of the most heartwarming things, they say, is giving these senior citizens an opportunity to feel young again.

The Josyln Center said they are always looking for volunteers for their Meals on Wheels program.
