Whitewater rest area closed due to water pump failure
The eastbound and westbound rest areas in Whitewater are closed off Tuesday.
According to a Caltrans official, the Whitewater rest area was closed on Monday “due to another pump failure.”
In April, the rest area was reopened after being shut down for months, but crews were able to fix the water pump.

Terri Kasinga, the chief public information officer for Caltrans District 8, said Tuesday that the rest area will be closed until further notice, once “all the involved staff has returned from holiday vacations there will be a meeting to address the next approach to the repairs.”
“We are continuing our investigation into why the pumps continue to fail, but at this point we will be discussing repairs to the antiquated system that feeds into the pump. Some of the options would be to pursue a project to rebuild the well and pump systems or an emergency project to make some of those repairs, which will be costly.”
Kasinga also said the well system will eventually need to be rebuilt.
“The bottom line is that the rest area is antiquated and cannot sustain the high usage with the current well system, and therefore it will need to be rebuilt in the future.”
