Wife of man struck and killed in roadway on Christmas day speaks out

“He left our house after we had Christmas dinner with my parents and he wanted to go visit his parents, so he left,” said Rachel Contreras, wife of Ramon Contreras.

That was the last time Rachel would see her husband alive.

“I found out later that he hit something in the middle of the road that locked his car and he wasn’t able to move it,” Rachel said.

His car disabled, 36-year-old Ramon Contreras of Indio crossed over Avenue 42 in Bermuda Dunes to call his wife from the AM-PM for help.

They talked, she agreed to find a ride but he never made it back to the vehicle.

“The police said he had been hit by two cars,” Rachel said.

Investigators said the driver of the vehicle stopped and cooperated, but Rachel believes there’s more to the story.

“I know that two people were involved and one of the persons that hit him left the scene, and it’s really tragic that they could be heartless and leave a man to die on the street,” Rachel said.

Police say evidence at the scene indicated Ramon was highly intoxicated.

Rachel says she seeking help for closure for her, their 14-year-old son, and their one-year-old baby girl.

“I’m just really heartbroken and I just want answers and I want closure. If anybody can help bring me closure and answers I’d appreciate that,” Rachel said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the California Highway Patrol.

A fundraising page has been set up to help the family with Ramon’s funeral and burial, you can donate here.

Rachel has also informed us that you can also drop-off donations to 51820 Avenida Vallejo in La Quinta.
