Digicom students attend Film Festival Gala with Mayor Moon

Every year top students from the Digicom program are honored with the chance to attend the Palm Springs International Film Festival Gala with the mayor of Palm Springs. This year two students will be walking the red carpet with Mayor Robert Moon.

Those students are seniors Cain Crandall and Kayla Mariner. Crandall hopes to one day pursue a career as a film editor.

“I’ve always thought editing was the most interesting aspect of film. I love being behind a computer and handling every aspect of the film on a screen,” Crandall said.

Mariner is focusing on directing.

“I love filmmaking in general. I can do a lot of different roles. I do the producing, the editing and directing typically for my films,” Mariner said.

The students said they’re thrilled to have the opportunity to rub shoulders with role models in their future industry.

“It’s really interesting to see people that I really admire in the career choice that I want to pursue,” Crandall said.

“I love filming and filming is my passion and to be selected to go and see these people and meet people and be able to watch and learn and all of this and actually get the experience to go I was just, wow,” Mariner said.

Moon said the Digicom program is doing amazing things for students in the community.

“A lot of these students have decided this is the career they want but also it’s something a lot of students who may not want to go into that career they’ve found something in school that motivates them, so it keeps them coming to school and studying,” Moon said.

Typically, there are six students who join the mayor, but this year the city wanted to open the opportunity to 10 people from Palm Springs, holding a raffle for all residents in the city.

“You see all the lines of people out front watching the stars come in. These five winners and their guest will not only go to the film festival they will walk the red carpet,” Moon said.
