How #MeToo movement is impacting awards season

Celebrities have long used the award show acceptance speech as a platform to gain attention to issues important to them.

Now, the sexual harassment scandal is front and center in their own industry – and many aren’t shying away from it.

Jessica Chastain, being honored for her role in Molly’s Game, has already been very vocal denouncing sexual harassment – and award season is just starting.

She’s been very vocal advocating for women’s rights and condemning Harvey Weinstein, accused of sexual assault. She even told the New York Times she was shocked to be nominated for a Golden Globe, fearing speaking out could hurt her career.

Then there’s Gal Gadot, winner of the Rising Star Award for her portrayal of Wonder Woman. She’s said she and others in the film didn’t want to be part of a super hero sequel unless producer Brett Ratner, accused of sexual harassment, is out.

The #METOO movement ignited fast on social media, and now with awards stages at hand, it’s likely to spread even more.

“This is a watershed moment. People are doing a check, they’re checking themselves now,” Kim Waltrip, president of Wonderstar Productions, said.

She worked with Weinstein on the film ‘The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby’, starring Chastain.

“I’m completely appalled and amazed at how fast this all came about and he went down,” she said.

She says it shows a shift in Hollywood, and that we can expect to hear about it in acceptance speeches.

“Palm Springs Film Festival is the landscape. It will set the landscape for how it might go down,” she noted.
