Deputies killed in the line of duty 21 years ago today
On January 5, 1997, two Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies died in the line of duty.
Deputies Michael Haugen and James Lehmann Jr. were shot while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Whitewater.

The two deputies were ambushed. Timothy Russell was sentenced to death for the killings that same year, he was found dead in his cell in 2013.
In 2005, an exit along Interstate 10 in Whitewater, north of Palm Springs, was renamed Haugen-Lehmann Way in their memory.
