Fire causes $200,000 in damage at local storage facility

An early-morning fire at a storage facility in Indio on Saturday caused major damage to more than two-dozen units.

Crews with Cal Fire Riverside County responded to the StoreAmerica Self Storage facility in the 45000 block of on Flower Street at 4:47 a.m.

According to reports, when firefighters arrived on scene there was a row of six-to-seven units engulfed in flames. It took 44 firefighters roughly three hours to get the fire under control. Officials said more than thirty units suffered some sort of damage.

The facility suffered more than $200-thousand dollars in damage.

“We never know what is actually burning inside of these storage facilities or storage units, so we want to take a precautionary approach from an environmental health standpoint to ensure the water quality is not tainted,” said Battalion Chief Bonifacio De La Cruz.

The city’s public works department was called in to assist with water run-off. No injuries were reported.
