Toys R Us to close Indio store
Toys R Us says it will close up to 182 stores nationwide, including its location in north Indio, as part of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization plan.
The toy chain says it’s being squeezed by Amazon.com and huge chains like Walmart.
It will begin closing a number of its stores starting in February.
The Indio closure at the Indio Towne Center Shopping Plaza will mark the second major loss of a retailer along the north Jackson corridor just north of Interstate 10. Target also closed it’s Jackson Avenue SuperTarget location in north Indio early last year.
Toys R Us has been hobbled by $5 billion in debt. The company once dominated toy sales in the U.S. but filed for bankruptcy protection in September.
Chairman and CEO Dave Brandon said in a letter Wednesday that tough decisions are required to save Toys R Us.
Brandon said that the majority the targeted stores will be closed by mid-April and that there will be deep discounts at those locations.
Toys R Us is based in Wayne, New Jersey.
The Southern California stores scheduled to close are in Riverside, L.A., Ventura, Orange and San Diego counties.
