PS City Council approves removing tamarisk trees
The Palm Springs City Council voted Wednesday to remove a large row of Tamarisk trees from a city golf course.
A large group of people from the Crossley neighborhood were present for the vote.
They want a large row of tamarisk trees to be removed along the Tahquitz Creek Legends golf course.
Some people at the meeting believed the trees were planted in the 1950’s to block the view of a historically black neighborhood from golfers on the course.
“A lot of people say that they were put there to keep the golf balls from hitting the houses it’s not doing that. The houses are still getting torn up by the golf balls,” said Gary Watkins, a Crossley neighborhood resident.
“It is kind of far back for us to know what the original intent was. It may have been as a weather block or a wind block but now it affects the price of our properties,” said Kevin Harmon, who also lives in the Crossley neighborhood.
People who live in the neighborhood said the trees are a fire hazard, a health hazard, and are driving down the value of their homes because homeowners can’t see the mountains from their yards.
The city council also voted on letting ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft pick up passengers Palm Springs International Airport. You can read about that story here.
