Man who set woman on fire turns himself in to police

Update: A man who allegedly set his mother on fire in the loading dock area of the Mathis Brothers in Indio has turned himself in at the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department office in Indio. He’s expected to face charges of attempted murder, assault and arson.

The woman, who suffered severe burns from her knees up, has been airlifted to Arrowhead Burn Center in Colton. The woman confirmed that the suspect was her son.

Good Samaritans nearby helped extinguish the flames.

Just before 6 a.m. this morning, a woman was set on fire in the loading dock area of the Mathis Brothers located at 81410 Highway 111 in Indio, according to Dan Marshall of the Indio Police Department. She has been airlifted to the hospital

The Indio Police Department, Cal Fire, and the Riverside County Sheriff Department’s forensics team are on the scene investigating the incident. Police believe the suspect who set the woman on fire was her son. Neither the suspect nor the victim has been identified.
