Motorcyclist killed in Cathedral City crash identified

A 20-year-old motorcyclist was killed in Cathedral City when his bike struck a car pulling out of a driveway, throwing the rider off his mount, police said today.

Juan Macias of Cathedral City died at the scene of the 5:45 p.m. Monday crash in the 34500 block of Cathedral Canyon Drive.

Macias was heading south on Cathedral Canyon “at a high rate of speed” when a car exiting a gated community pulled into the roadway, according to Cmdr. Julio Luna. Macias’ motorcycle struck the side of the car, throwing him from the bike, Luna said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car, who was identified as former Cathedral City council member Paul Marchand, remained at the scene and was cooperative with investigators, Luna said. Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash.
