Local Republicans react to State of the Union

Dozens of people showed up to East Valley Republican Women’s Federated for a State of the Union viewing party and an Indio pastor used the opportunity to announce his run for state Assembly.

More than 50 people gathered together to watch the speech. Many clapped along during the several long applause breaks during the State of the Union.

“I thought it was completely stellar. I thought it was greatly articulate and everything I expect in our commander in chief,” said Anthony Parham from Indio.

“I think President Trump did a good job and I think he is doing great for the country right now, and our economy is doing a lot better than it was,” said Albert Slade of La Quinta.“I guess I am critical. I like the speech, but I would like to see more about what are we proposing in the future not only where we are,” said Don Lahn of Palm Desert.

People at the viewing party booed the screen when they saw shots of Democratic leaders sitting in their seats not applauding.

“That was pretty sad to have them sit there and be stone face when there are some things that in the past they have been pushing and agree with. Unfortunately they are against anything that he wants to do,” Lahn said.“There seems to be a lot of a lack of respect for the country and for our president from the other party,” said Catherine Krupsaw of Palm Desert.

Local Republican candidates running for various offices were also at the viewing party including Jeff Gonzalez, a pastor and Marine Corps veteran who announced he will be running for California State Assembly District 56, which includes the Coachella Valley.“It’s time for these gas taxes to go down. It’s time for health care to be improved. It’s time for our education system to go up. I have kids, I need this to happen for my kids and for the kids in my neighborhood as well,” Gonzalez said.

Local Republicans are looking forward to this Saturday when Republican candidate for governor Travis Allen, will be having a rally at the Republican headquarters at 2 p.m.
