Update: Supervisor V. Manuel Perez releases DACA resolution
Update: Supervisor Perez has released the full text of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) resolution that will be presented at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday. The document starts off with a preamble to the issues DACA currently faces as well as an outlining of the key players involved, the hones in on the local impact.
“Riverside County is one of the most diverse areas of the United States, and that diversity keeps us strong and vibrant,” the resolution reads. “The development of a comprehensive and functioning immigration system is essential to ensuring our county’s and America’s future economic prosperity.”
The resolution acknowledges that there are “several pending proposals in Congress,” that attempt to address the impending issue which DACA’s expiration presents, but it falls short of endorsing any one in particular. The resolution aims “to endorse and encourage bipartisan, bicameral negotiation that emerges into a timely agreement,” and to ” call on our federal representatives to support Dreamers.”

Supervisor V. Manuel Perez of Riverside’s 4th district and Supervisor Marion Ashley of Riverside’s 5th district have taken a huge step forward in solidifying the futures of the 13,000+ Dreamers in the county today. Perez and Ashley have drafted a joint resolution to spur on comprehensive immigration reform and support area DACA recipients.
“I have met many of these young people, Dreamers, who have done well in school and have given back to our community and country,” stated Supervisor V. Manuel Perez via news release.”Their dreams and achievements strengthen us. I reiterate my hope for a positive resolution that offers opportunities for Dreamers to stay in this country and ultimately enhance their ability to contribute by becoming citizens of our great nation.”
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was implemented as a work permit and temporary protection program to cover nearly 790,000 young people who came to the U.S. before the age of 16. It was put in place by President Obama via executive action in 2012.
“It’s time for Congress and the President to address immigration issues for the benefit of DACA children and the American people. A bipartisan, comprehensive solution is long overdue,” stated Supervisor Marion Ashley via news release.
The resolution comes at a precarious time for DACA; on March 5th, the permits allowing Dreamers to avoid deportation in the U.S. will begin to expire. The renewable permits were two years in length and will be honored for their full duration even after the March deadline.
The resolution will be presented at Board of Supervisors meeting on Feb. 6th.
The resolution can be found on the Board of Supervisors meeting agenda web page.
