Former Thermal HS teacher convicted of attempted sexual abuse

Imperial County District Attorney Gilbert G. Otero announced that Anthony Robert Korwin, a former Desert Mirage high school teacher, has been convicted on sexual abuse charges today. The 59-year-old’s conviction is on charges of an attempted lewd act on a 14-year-old child, meeting a minor for lewd purposes, and communication with a minor to commit a sexual offense.

Korwin was arrested on June 5, 2017 in El Centro following a sting conducted by Homeland Security. His personal electronics devices were confiscated and searched by law enforcement, where they found one image of child pornography and several images of child erotica.

From January 24 to June 5, 2017, Korwin communicated knowingly with a person he believed to be a 14-year-old child and discussed ” kissing the child, exposing himself to the child, having sexual intercourse with the child and taking photos of the child,” according to the Imperial County District Attorney’s news release.

Prior to his arrest, Korwin taught green energy and technology at Desert Mirage high school in Thermal.

“The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force allows us to collaborate with agents from the Department of Homeland Security and the Imperial County Probation Department to protect the most vulnerable members of our community,” Otero explained in the news release.

Korwin’s sentencing is scheduled for March 7 at 8:30 a.m. in Department One of the Imperial County Superior Court.
