Driver in serious condition after crashing into tree in Rancho Mirage

A driver is in serious condition after being cut from the wreckage of his SUV in Rancho Mirage Thursday night.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, they received reports of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 111 and Atrium Way just before 8:30 p.m.

An SUV crashed into the center median, hitting a tree, which hit another passing vehicle. The driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital after crews were able to free him from the crashed vehicle.

All occupants of the passing car were uninjured.

Crews were still on scene after 10:00 p.m. investigating the crash, which shut down both directions of Highway 111 for several hours.

It is unknown if alcohol and drugs played a factor in the crash at this time.
