Nearly 100 CVUSD teachers will be laid off
Over 100 Coachella Valley Unified School District teachers and dozens of administrators were voted to be laid off Thursday night.
It’s something teachers have been worried about since CVUSD sent out a letter, explaining cuts would be made due to a $10.4 million deficit.

“The cuts you are proposing on all four lists of layoffs far exceed the ($) 10.6 million, if that is even an accurate number,” said Carissa of the Caused Teachers Association.
Some CVUSD parents said classrooms are already over-crowded.
“I’ve noticed that they do struggle a lot when it comes to asking questions because they’re embarrassed because the classes are so big, and my kids are shy, so it has impacted them a lot,” Adriana Hernandez, a concerned parent said.
On a long list of jobs to potentially get cut are six bilingual psychologist technicians.
“This is like the worst time,” a concerned parent told KESQ and CBS Local 2. “We need more psychologists instead of less, so let’s pray they don’t make those cuts.”
“We barely have enough teachers to teach the class, sometimes each class needs a sub for an entire year,” said Carla Favera, a student at West Shores High School.
Favera says she’s speaking for those who are too scared to take a stand.
“If I’m going to complain about something not happening and I didn’t try, then it’s on me. I was about to cry up there. It’s really sad people focus on a number not on what we need,” Favera said.
Employees will start receiving their layoff notices by March 15.
KESQ and CBS Local 2 reached out to Superintendent Gomez before the vote, he responded with this statement:
“The district is reviewing how to best address the needs of our students through different means. The CVUSD board and administration are committed to sound fiscal management, and making the necessary reductions in a responsible way, keeping staff, stakeholders and the community informed.”
