Robbery suspect pursuit ends with major-injury crash near Thermal airport
Cal Fire and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department have responded to the scene of a car accident at the intersection of Higgins Drive and Airport Boulevard in Thermal near the Thermal airport. Drivers are advised to steer clear of the area.
Shortly after 2 p.m., deputies from the Coachella Valley Action Team attempted to stop a vehicle believed to be involved in a Coachella robbery according to Deputy Armando Munoz of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The suspect’s vehicle failed to stop on the 86 Expressway north of Airport Boulevard and a short pursuit followed.
The suspect’s vehicle came to stop after it broadsided a pick-up truck on Airport Boulevard east of Harrison Street.
One female passenger in the suspect’s vehicle was transported to the hospital serious injuries. The other two occupants of the vehicle were detained, the pickup driver suffered minor injuries, Munoz confirmed.
Airport Boulevard is closed between Tyler and Harrison streets and is likely to remain closed for several hours. Drivers were advised to avoid the area.
