Uber cleared to begin service at Palm Spring International Airport
Cab drivers and kindly relatives won’t be the only drivers to pick up passengers from Palm Springs International Airport next week. Uber has announced today that they will begin picking up directly from the airport come Monday, March 19.
In January, the Palm Springs City Council unanimously approved a new ordinance to allow ride-hailing services to begin picking up directly from the airport. The ordinance will allow ride-sharing drivers to move away from their former spot of relegation across the street from PSP on El Cielo Rd.
“The City Council recognizes visitors have a desire to use ride-sharing services at Palm Springs International Airport,” said city manager David H. Ready. “Tourism is important for the city and we want to ensure everyone has an easy and enjoyable experience at the Airport.”
The new ordinance was championed by city council member Christy Holstege, who says that the decision will prove to have a youthful appeal.
“I’m the first millennial to be elected on Palm Springs city council and so it is something that’s important that I bring that other voice,” said Holstege. “We really want to stay up with the newest technology and the industry standards.”
Uber’s pink-tinged competitor, Lyft, will not be found at the airport on March 19., as the city is still waiting for the ride-hailing service’s final application.
