CHP searching for driver who struck school bus in Mecca
A driver who struck a school bus carrying 66 children in Mecca today, then fled the scene, was being sought by authorities.
The California Highway Patrol is seeking the driver of a white sedan that rear-ended a bus at 7:35 a.m. on westbound Avenue 70, approaching Cleveland Street.
The bus slowed to pick up a child when the unidentified sedan driver hit the bus, according to CHP Officer Mike Radford. No one on the bus was hurt.
Following the crash, the sedan remained stopped on the shoulder behind the bus for about five minutes, before driving around the bus, then stopping in front of it for another five minutes.
Without contacting the bus driver, the sedan drove off, Radford said.
The make and model of the sedan was not disclosed, but Radford said the car might have minor front end damage.
Anyone with information regarding the suspect and/or suspect vehicle was asked to call the Indio CHP Office at (760) 772-5300 and ask for Investigating Officer Carillo.
